So, even though I’m a Giants fan, the last thing I need to see is another series with the San Diego Padres. What a schedule over the next 12 games. 3 games with the Padres at home, followed by 3 games with the D’Back’s at home. Then three games at Petco Park with the Padres and another 3 games with the D’Backs. Nice work by MLB on the scheduling.
Fortunately, I have MLB through my Roku box so as far as I’m concerned, it’s time to enjoy some other games. Was I in for a surprise.
First up, the Pirates and the Cardinals. And who is on the mound for the Pirates. Jonathan Sanchez. Yes. Jonathan Sanchez. The Pirates are belated with so many injuries to their pitching staff that they felt it was time to give Sanchez another chance.
Now, keep in mind that last year, when Sanchez pitched for the Royals, he hit Shin Soo Choo in the knee with a pitch and the next thing you know, both benches emptied. This was after Choo said throw it over the plate. Yeah right, that’s really going to happen.
Let’s not forget that in 2011, Choo would face Sanchez when he was with the Giants. Sanchez hit him on the thumb and broke it. Choo was out for two months. I’m sure that Choo must be wondering what is going to happen when the Reds and Pirates meet again. He must be saying this guy is like gum on my shoe. I can’t get away from him. I think Dusty will give him the day off.
In any case, this game was going to be even more exciting for me because there could be a fight between the Cardinals and the Pirates. All right.
Lets face it, it’s not like Sanchez is hitting anyone on purpose. As a Giants fan, you got used to this in 2010 and that was probably one of the reasons we traded him to the Royals for Melky Cabrera. I’m sure that the Royals GM will no longer be speaking with Sabean after that. Sabean does make some good trades in any case. And in one case, he even brought back two players that he traded away the previous year.
So, here we go. Bottom of the first inning. No score. Matt Carpenter is up. He hits a home run to center field. 415 feet. Next batter. Carlos Beltran. He hits a home run to left field. 373 feet. At this point, I’m reminded of that famous scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s next where Jack Nicholson is giving his best impression of being a radio announcer. Mantle swings. It’s a ***** home run.
Next batter is Holiday. He singles to center. Next batter is Craig. He’s hit by a pitch. Craig glares at Sanchez. A fight. Nope. Sanchez is ejected from the game. Hurdle comes out to the mound to argue. He must have said, come on, he didn’t hit him on purpose. He does it all the time. Hurdle is ejected.
After that, Jeanmar Gomez comes into the game. Does well for five innings but the Cardinals win 9-1. I had turned off the game long before that.
Jonathan Sanchez. Made big contributions to the Giants when we won the World Series in 2010. Pitched a no-hitter against the Padres. Sad to see him go out like this. How long will the Pirates keep him? Well, if he faces the Mets, I’m sure Terry Collins will give the day off to David Wright and other key players on the team. In fact, I’m sure that the other teams will do the same thing. Clint Hurdle is a smart manager. Right?
