Usually, Frank Kane has written detective novels where the main character is Johnny Liddell. Liddell is solving a murder while having a battle with mobsters in the process. Many other writers of the pulp era did the same thing.
Kane shows his versitality in The Living End. In this book, Kane takes a crack at the literary world with a story about the music business and how payola was a factor in the 1950’s. Kane creates a story around Eddie Marlon and uses the conflict of his position at a radio radio station and how he becomes a powerful figure in the industry.
In the story, the conflict is Eddie Marlon and how much of an efflect he has on the recording artists. His radio show becomes popular and he wants to make sure that the recording artists do exactly what he says or he will end their career.
As the story grows, Eddie gains more power by organizing the disc jockeys to work with him, further corrupting the buiness along with his payola scheme. The question is who will stop him before he gains so much power that he will change the music busines forever.
I found it to be a very intersting story. It’s probably a good lesson in the business world as to what happens when someone gains power and abuses it. It leads to a very exciting conclusion where you wonder if Eddie will be able to hold on to all the power that the has.
Kane did his job well here. He wrote a story on a problem in the 1950’s and created a great story that was compelling. Blending history and taking an issue like this shows that Kane was more than a mystery writer.
I give Kane credit for writing this story. It’s a great read and worth 5 stars.
