It was my wife who came to me and asked if I wanted to watch Mr. Selfridge. She mentioned that Jeremy Piven was the star so I figured why not. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched Masterpiece Theater. I think the last time I watched it was when the Inspector Lynley series was on.
The show is supposed to be a fact based drama on Harry Gordon Selfridge. He made Marshall Fields a huge success and wanted to go to London to do the same thing . It’s the American dream in London.
Entourage.was a great show and I had no expectations that he was going to be Ari Gold again. I saw a review in the New York Times and they felt that he was uncomfortable in his new role. I don’t know how they see these things because I didn’t pick up on that at all.
Other reviews compared this show to Downtown Abbey. I never saw this show so I can’t make a judgement. I happen to like shows from this era like Ripper Street though.
In one scene, Selfridge’s son told his father that he got into a fight with someone at school because he said that his father was a huckster. His son took it as an insult. If there was one way to summarize Selfridge’s character, it was that he was always self-promoting his store.
By the second hour of the show, there seemed to be some side stories developing. Agnes Tower living with her brother when her abusive father appears and wants to go home again. This seems like an explosive situation since they ran away from their father before.
Selfridge was known for having affairs. There may be something brewing with a popular actress in the show although that seems to be on the shelf right now.
Then there is a waiter who is attracted to Agnes. He seems to have other women interested in him as well.
This is an eight part series. I would say for now that I’ll continue to watch the series and I don’t have a reason not to give this show five stars.
