The show is known as the cold-war drama. Brent Bozell referred to the Americans as the anti-hero.
The show takes place in 1981 and the theory is that Russian spy are living in the United Stats and are reporting back to the KGB. The two spies are Phil and Elizabeth Jennings, played by Matthew Rhys and Kerri Russell.
As the show opened, The Jennings have kidnapped a KGB defector and they lock him in the trunk of his car. Evidently, as the show goes on, there is a relationship between the Jennings and the KGB defector.
Much of the show has flashbacks of The Jennings becoming KGB agents and their strained marriage. They do have two children but they’re not supposed to know that their mother and father come from Russia.
The strain of the marriage goes further when Matthew wants to consider defecting. Elizabeth is against the idea and is a loyal KGB agent. The strain grows further as they decide what to do with the KGB Agent.
One of the complaints about the show is that it takes place in the 80’s and the spying is primative. There are several times during the show that Matthew Rhys is wearing a wig but I thought he looked much different.
The other part of the show that I liked was finding out that the Jennings had martial arts skills. Matthew is using his skills several times in the show when attacking an older man who made a pass at his daughter.
As the show grows further, we begin to see how the CIA will work hart to try and prove that the Jennings are agents for the Kremlin. The relationship grows further when an employee moves in next door to the Jennings.
It’s hard to say that I’m rooting for the Russians, especially since Brent Bozell referred to them as the Anti-Christ. No mention of Aldrich Ames or the secrets he sold out to the Russians.
I would give this show 5 stars.
