I saw the pilot of this show on NBC. It’s about a famous socialite named Vivian Bowers who we see is going to meet someone for drugs in the opening scene. From there, she is found murdered in a hotel room.
From there, we see Laz Alonso, an FBI agent who is suspicious that it wasn’t a drug overdose but murder. So he looks up Vivian’s estranged friend, Megan Good, who is also a police detective. He wants her to blend in the family and see if she could determine who the suspects and find out who murdered Vivian Bowers.
The family is led by Robert Bowers, who is a CEO of a pharmaceutical company He is obviously very upset about her death and based on a phony story that Megan makes up, he decides to let her into his home and live with the family.
I thought that while the whole investigation seemed unorthodox - the police and the FBI spying on a family - I enjoyed the show. Maybe I shouldn’t complain about the spying since this was the premise behind Homeland, a Showtime series where the CIA is spying on a US soldier to see if he has turned. In that show, they had cameras inside his home. I’m still enjoying that series as well
Much of the tension builds in Deceptions as Megan uncovers the faults of the various members of the family. That, along with the possibility that someone may find out that she is actually spying on the family keeps the show moving at a nice pace.
It doesn’t seem like the show will have the police involved where someone will find the murderer based on DNA evidence like the CSI shows. Instead, each show will be based on trying to come closer to finding out who committed the murder.
It seems like a tough task to me, dragging this out for a whole season. Like most TV series, they’re supposed to go on for other seasons and build up ratings and see how the long the show will air. Can it go 30 or even 50 episodes and keep us wondering who killed Vivian Bowers.
I’d like to find out in any case. It’s a great show with a great cast led by Victor Garber. I would give it five stars and hope the show continues to be good as the first episode.
