This is the first British mysteries series I’ve see where there is police corruption is involved. Commander Clare Blake has given a speech saying among other things that she is out to clean up the police force.
In the meantime, DCI Doug James is trying to clear up a shooting that shouldn’t have happened. One of his men opened fire on a man who was unarmed and killed him. James is seen doctoring the video before turning it in to Commander Blake.
Blake may have a problem of her own. She had arrested James Lampton many years ago but now he is out on parole. He has written a book on rehabilitation and how much prison has changed him. Yet he is accused of murder again of another young woman this time.
At first, Doug James doesn’t want to tell Blake of his investigation because he wants to use it as leverage against her investigation of his man involved in the shooting. Another woman on the force does tell Blake of the investigation and Blake is concerned that she may be embarrassed since she wrote the forward to Lampton’s book and believed that he has been rehabilitated.
In what’s supposed to be a male dominated police force, James seems to be a power heel in the story and it seems that you don’t know who to trust on the force. To me, that’s what kept this story moving for me.
All in all, this is off to a good start and I want to see how the series continues. I would give this four stars.
